West Side Story is a musical comedie, realised in 1961 and it takes place in streets of New York. It was the same story of Romeo & Juliet because it plot is based of this history.
The film show two gang rivals gang called the Jets( american) and the Sharks( PuertoRicans) . They're always are in competition. At a party, one member of a gang of the Jets (Tony) falls in love with the sister ( Maria )of the chief of his gang enemy. So, start a imposssible love between them. At the end, there is a big fighting between the two gang and one member of each group die. Bernado kills Riff so Tony kills Bernando. When Maria learnt this new she want to kill herself because without her love, she has any reason to live.. So, the ending scene, Tony was kill in Maria's arms and she cry she cry.
In my opinion ; this film was boring because there are too much songs all the twenty minutes! . But it was a amazing and funny film too with a beautiful romance but tragic. The story remember Romeo & Juliet's movie. I think West Side Story is a remake of Shakespeare's history.
Differents and similarities between Romeo & Juliet and West Side Story
WSS and Romeo & Juliet have similaries things. On the one hand, there are two rivals "gang" or family who always pick the fight at the other; there is a party which begiing love between one characters of the group and a girl of the opposate's. But they know thieir love is impossible so they meet secretly and "married" secretly too.
In the two film, there is a big fight between both bands and the same order of murders( one kill, an other kill this one because he has kill one of his gang) . At the end, the same plot again,girl's confident( Anita in WSS and her nurse in Romeo & Juliet) lied to the girl then she kills herself to go to join the boy who like believing dead . But it is always alive. So when the person arrives and sees it, she kills herself has his turn.
One the other hand, West Side story in itself different. It is a bit odd musical ( musical comedy)while R&J is more poetic. But two are tragic seen they're based in the same history.
The Shakespeare's adaption movie is more modern that the book.
Romeo& Juliet was adpat many times in all the world cause it's a famous history. Public know for the 16. siecle this tragic romance of Romeo Montaigu and Juliet Capulet. She was evoque during much years in several collections of novels in Italy. Some translations crossed borders .
