War on Screen

Band of Brothers: (the veterans)

http://www.dday-overlord.com/eng/band_of_brothers_veterans.htm

The story of the men from the 506 PIR, 101st Airborne, Easy Company

"Ordinary men, an extraordinary story". This sentence summarizes perfectly the D-Day veterans and also the Easy Company veterans and what they have been through in Europe between 1944 and 1945.

Steven Spielberg has always been interested in World War II. For example, some of WW2 films are: 1941, Empire of the Sun. That is why he decided to direct the very realistic film Saving Private Ryan, which tells the story of a platoon searching Private Ryan during the battle of Normandy.

This movie was a huge success around the world. Saving Private Ryan had to be successful so that Band of Brothers could exist.

Thus, there are similarities in terms of direction between Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers with the now famous technique of "shoulder camera" which gives a very realistic impression during the film, including during combat.

But it is mainly its respect for historical details (both the script and the fights) which makes Band of Brothers being one of the best World War II series.

More than 10.000 participants, 500 actors and a budget of more than $120.000.000 were necessary for its creation which made it one of the most expensive series in history.

Apocalypse Now
is a 1979 American epic war film set (which takes place) during the Vietnam War. The plot revolves around two US Army
special operations officers, one of whom, Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) of a special operation unit, is sent into the jungle to assassinate the other, the rogue
(rebelle) and presumably insane (mad) Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando) of Special Forces. The film was produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The script is based on Joseph Conrad's novella (a long short-story) Heart of Darkness. The film became notorious (infamous) in the entertainment press due to its lengthy (rather long) and troubled (full of problems) production, as documented (described) in Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. Marlon Brando showed up to the set overweight and Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack. The production was also beset by extreme weather that destroyed several expensive sets (décors). In addition, the release date of the film was delayed several times as Coppola struggled to come up with an ending and to edit the millions of feet of footage that he had shot.

The film won the Cannes Palme d'Or and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

All three films condemn war for its bloodshed and the horrors committed on the battlefield for they are all drawn in dark colours such as all shades of gray and black with dark red for AN. The soldiers look/seem small and fragile against the sky which enhances /underlines / highlights their precarious position.

However SPR and BB salute/ highlight the bonds of friendship created between soldiers during the fights such as brotherhood and help, sometimes heroic/ brave actions done to save a fellow soldier from danger even at the cost of one's own life. The light from the horizon creates an impression of hope in the midst of chaos.

On the other hand the poster of Apocalypse Now, especially the one above, while using the same technique as the other two (the faces of two men at the top against a dark cloudy sky, the dark earth at the bottom and the light coming from the horizon line) conveys a completely different message -- that of madness and evil (we are not sure the men are soldiers or crazy people) drenched in blood and fire (the background is red which underlines the impression of bloodshed -river of blood, and napalm destroying men and Nature in Vietnam) represented by the setting sun over the river.

The Sea Of Hands is an initiative of ANTaR.

ANTaR is an Australian organisation for Justice, Rights and Reconciliation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

ANTaR means Australians for Native Title and Reconcilation.

They work against racism against Aboriginal and Indigenous peoples.

They want reconciliation between Indigenous Australians and the Australian Government, because between 1869 and 1969,the Australian Government kidnapped many aboriginal children to place them in English families or orphanages.

(Painted dots are typical of Aboriginal Art)

They were Stolen Generations.

ANTaR believes education is vital to overcome Indigenous disadvantages and achieve reconciliation in Australia.

This organization works for Constitutional Change and Human Rights Act too.

About the Sea Of Hands

The Sea of Hands was created in 1997 as a powerful, physical representation of the Citizen's Statement on Native Title. And now, there are approximately 300,000 Australians who have signed ANTaR's petition, and there are more than 120,000 "plastic-hands" in the Sea Of Hands.

"The Sea of Hands has been installed in every major city and many regional locations throughout Australia, and continues to gather signatures everywhere it appears." explains ANTaR's website.

The first Sea Of Hands was made on October 12th1997, just in front of the Parliament House in Canberra.

The Sea of Hands is a manifestation in order to show Australian people's racism and violence against Aboriginals and how English people have stolen Aboriginal land when they arrived in Australia.

They have become slaves.

(Aboriginal slaves)

In the Sea Of Hands, there are many different hands, in red, black and yellow.

They represent the Aboriginal Flag.

There are blue, green and white hands too which symbolize the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

The Sea Of Hands is a symbol of the People's Movement for reconciliation.

ANTAR = Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation. "Sea of Hands".

On Wednesday 13th February, Australia's Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, was saying sorry to the Stolen Generation of Indigenous Australians.

“ANTaR and the Sea of Hands are fundamental to the achievement of justice and Reconciliation in this country”

The Sea of Hands is central to ANTaR’s activities. The Sea of Hands is Australia's largest public art installation and colourfully represents the names of over 300,000 Australians who have shown their support for native title and reconciliation.

The Sea of Hands is recognised by hundreds of thousands of Australians as a symbol of the people's movement for rights-based reconciliation. It was ANTaR’s first public event, staged to protest against the Federal Government's proposed changes to the Native Title Act.

ANTaR's goals :
  • maintaining close liaison with Indigenous leaderships and communities;
  • conducting national campaigns and lobbying on Indigenous affairs issues;
  • conducting education and awareness projects targeted at non-Indigenous Australians and international audiences.

What's ANTaR ? : Central to ANTaR s activities is the Sea of Hands. Almost 250,000 Australians have put their signatures on a hand in the Sea of Hands and helped in its installation in locations around Australia.

Australian Aborigines were almost exterminated by the English settlers. Today, they represent only 1% of the Australian population. They were literally massacred by the colonizers and expelled from their land. They were pushed to the North of the country. The Aborigines are extremely spiritual people and by 1770 they were so primitive that they didn't know what metal was. Most instruments and artifacts were made from wood, rock or bones. The boomerang itself was primarily a toy used to entertain the villagers, only later being used as a hunting and war device.

Sea Of Hands was created to help aboriginal tribes
.

________________________________________

The Aboriginal Flag is composed of 3 colours (
red and black lines and a yellow circle at the center) :

This flag symbolises Aboriginal identity: Yellow represents the sun(giver of life), red represents the red earth (the relationship to the land) and the red ochre used in ceremonies. Black represents the Aboriginal people.

It was designed by Harold Thomas, a man from Central Australia. It was created as a symbol of unity and national identity for Aboriginal people during the land rights movement of the early 1970s.

Over 300,000 Australians have signed their names on one of 120,000 plastic hands that make up the Sea of Hands, to show their support for Native Title and Reconciliation.
The Sea of Hands was created in 1997 as a powerful, physical representation of the Citizen's Statement on Native Title

The Sea of Hands is fundamentally a locally-focused reconciliation activity. Many local reconciliation groups and other community groups, such as churches, schools, universities, local events committees, etc, have staged small Sea of Hands events (which we call "puddles") of various sizes. This may involve anything from a few hundred to many thousands of hands.
The Sea of Hands was preceded by a petition, the Citizen's Statement on Native Title, which quickly attracted thousands of signatories. The Citizen's Statement was authored by Phil Glendenning (ANTaR's previous National President) and launched in early 1997 by Charles Perkins and others at the Harold Park Hotel in Sydney.
Realising that petitions presented to Parliament rarely have much of an impact, the organisers sought a way of producing a more effective and lasting result. The idea of a field of white hands in rows was conceived, like the white crosses of war cemeteries.Sea of Hands, Canberra 1997 The first Sea of Hands was held on the 12 October 1997. 70,000 coloured plastic hands, each one carrying one signature from the Citizen's Statement, were installed in front of Parliament House in Canberra. The Australian Aboriginal flag was created by Harold Thomas.

Many buildings in Australia fly the Aboriginal flag as well as the Australian flag, the Melbourne Trades Hall being an example. Various councils in Australian towns fly the Aboriginal flag from the town halls, such as Bendigo (adopted in 2005). The first city council to fly the Aboriginal flag was Newcastle City Council in 1977.

The sea of Hand was created to improve agreements made between aboriginals and Australians.

All hands show bright color: blue, yellow, green, red ... etc.

Why is Antar here?
ANTaR is here because more than ten years ago Indigenous leaders recognised that to achieve justice for their people, they needed to gain support for their cause from non-Indigenous Australians.

So Antar is here to get justice against racism between indigenous and white people!

Aboriginal flag

The Aboriginal Flag was designed by Harold Thomas an Aboriginal, in 1971. The flag was designed to be an eye-catching rallying symbol for the Aboriginal people and a symbol of their race and identity. black represents the Aboriginal people, red the earth and their spiritual relationship to the land, and yellow the sun, the giver of life.
So this flag was created to explain their race and identity! Each part
of the aboriginal flag says something on the Aboriginal people or their spiritual relationship.

Since 1997, the Sea of Hands has been as a powerful symbol of the "peoples' movement" of Australians who want genuine reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.
The six colours of the Sea of Hands represent the colours of the Aboriginal flag (red, black and yellow), the Torres Strait Islander flag (blue, green and white), and the Australian flag.
